Local Media Part 1: Writing a Newspaper Column

In order to build a thriving and successful practice, not only do you have to be found but you need to be trusted. One of the ways to build trust in a community of people is to speak through channels that are viewed as trusted sources of information. Within the general population, local media - television, newspaper and radio - is viewed as presenting trusted information. When you are associated with one (or more) of these media types, a portion of that trust will extend to you and your practice. This month we focus on local newspapers and other small publications.

So how do you go about getting a column in one of your local publications? The first thing to consider is which publication do you want to have a column in? There are usually many to choose from, including small free publications that go to residents in your area, publications from local hospitals, the larger newspapers and magazines. Pick up as many as you can find and browse through each publication to see if there is a health column appearing and if so, see if it has a particular slant. Even though there may be a health column already appearing, there may still be an opportunity for you to have a column with a different slant. Deciding which publication you are going to target is important because the next and most important step is to prepare some material.

At least 4 months worth of columns should be enough to start. You will have to provide samples of your material, and the publisher will want to be sure you can meet deadlines. If time is an issue for you, target a monthly publication. Once you have your publication chosen and you have sufficient material for 4-6 months, make contact with the editor. Do not plan on earning direct income from this column as the benefits come from increased patient flow. Check out the links below for some helpful hints. purehomeopathy, established in 2004 provides whole health care to you, your family and your friends. Located in Lafayette, Colorado, conveniently tucked between Denver and Boulder, purehomeopathy offers Colorado the finest natural and alternative medicine. Our practice includes Dr. Amerine, Naturopathic Doctor, Dee Warner, Family Nurse Practitioner and Karena Lindell, certified Massage Therapist. Services we provide include homeopathy, nutritional support including the Ultra Lite Weight Loss for Life Program, fertility enhancement and maya abdominal massage.

Job requirement: Graduated Naturopathic Doctor, must have taken boards or have board scores pending. Must have experience in homeopathy.

Job start: No later than July 1, 2009.

Job Description: This is a 1 year long position with the potential to join the practice after your internship. The job entails 32 hours a week, up to 15 hours a week seeing your own\npatients, 15 hours a week doing business administration and marketing, 2 hours\na week with Dr. Amerine for case review. During the fall, Dr. Amerine will be out for 8-10 week maternity leave, covering her patients in addition to your patients will be required. While Dr. Amerine is on maternity leave she will still be available weekly for case review.
